Because the components leave almost no visible gaps, the chain appears solid even though it still moves through many small joints.
The name comes from the smooth, scale-like surface rather than a snake motif. It does not mean the chain contains a wire shaped like a serpent, nor does it identify a particular alloy. Snake chains can be made in different metals, widths, finishes and internal constructions, so the product specifications remain essential.
You may also see round, flat or diamond-cut variations. A clear close-up photograph is more useful than the label when judging the outside profile and how it catches light.
What does a snake chain look and feel like?

The easiest confusion is snake versus herringbone. Both can look smooth, but herringbone forms a flat ribbon and prefers to move in the direction of that ribbon. Is a snake chain strong?

A fine chain and a substantial chain should not be judged as if the name makes them equivalent.
The compact surface can distribute movement across many small components, yet damage may be difficult to hide. A dent, stretched section or sharp kink interrupts the otherwise even tube. Repair options depend on the exact construction and material, so a professional should assess visible damage.
Before wearing the chain, let it hang freely and turn it slowly in the light. Look for one area that stays bent, a flattened section, a gap in the surface or an end fitting sitting out of line. Do not pull the chain to test it or press a kink flat with household tools.
Can you put a pendant on a snake chain?
Sometimes, but the decision belongs to the exact chain and pendant. Cooksongold describes snake chains as suitable for small pendants and warns against heavy or sharp-edged designs because the chain can kink and is harder to repair than an open-link style.
If the pendant is removable, check four things:
- Bail opening: it must pass over the widest part of the clasp and end fittings without force.
- Weight: the pendant should suit the chain's width and the maker's recommendation.
- Edges: the bail should move smoothly without cutting into or catching the chain's surface.
- Position: the pendant should settle at the lowest point without creating a sharp local bend.

How to prevent kinks and store a snake chain
Fasten the clasp and store the chain separately in a broad natural curve. Do not fold it into a small pouch, wrap it tightly around a card or place a heavy piece on top. GIA recommends individual padded storage rather than leaving jewelry loose in a drawer, where pieces can scratch or become damaged.
