Two earrings can both have a 10 mm outer diameter and fit differently if one has a 1 mm tube and the other has a thick sculpted profile. Product pages should state which measurement they use.

How to measure for huggie earrings
You need a mirror, a millimetre ruler and good light. A paper ruler can be easier to place near the ear than a heavy metal one.
- Identify the centre of the piercing hole.
- Measure in a straight line from that centre to the lowest edge of the earlobe or cartilage.
- Add space for comfort and the thickness of the hoop.
- Compare the result with the product's inner diameter, not its outer measurement.
If the distance from the piercing to the lobe edge is 5 mm, a 5 mm inner diameter is unlikely to be comfortable because the hoop itself needs clearance. You may need 6 or 7 mm depending on the shape of the earring and how closely you want it to sit.
Do not press the ruler into the tissue. Measure the relaxed ear. If possible, compare with a hoop you already own and note its inner diameter.

Cartilage fit is highly individual. The tissue shape, piercing angle and exact location influence the required diameter. A hoop that is too tight can place constant pressure on the channel.
For a healed cartilage piercing, measure carefully and ask a professional piercer when you are uncertain. For a new or healing piercing, do not replace the initial jewelry with a fashion huggie simply to achieve a closer look. Hoop thickness changes the fit
A thick huggie feels more substantial even when the inner diameter is unchanged. It also occupies more visual space and may touch the lobe sooner at the front or back.
Stone-set huggies can be top-heavy. A very close inner diameter helps keep the decorative face forward, but going too tight creates pressure. Choose the smallest comfortable diameter, not the smallest one that can technically close.

Open the hinge fully without twisting the two sides apart. Guide the post through the piercing from front to back, then bring the hinged section towards it until you hear or feel the click.
If it does not close easily, remove the earring and check the alignment. Do not squeeze the hoop against the lobe to force the post into the catch. A misaligned closure or diameter that is too small will not improve with pressure.
To remove it, support both sides close to the hinge and open the clasp gently. Pulling from the decorative front can stress the mechanism.
Can you sleep in huggie earrings?
Their small profile can feel more comfortable than a stud with a long post, but comfort does not make sleeping in every huggie ideal. Pressure from the pillow can irritate a piercing, press stones into the skin or strain a hinge.
